European Bank Ready to Fund Indonesian Rubber Replanting

Jakarta - Chairman of the Indonesian Rubber Board Aziz Pane revealed, banks from Europe were interested in helping to fund rubber rejuvenation or replanting in Indonesia.

"When coordinating the economy of Pak Darmin, he said, because the government had limited funds, it would be used to sell the wood and the proceeds from selling the timber would make farmers prosperous," he said, at Menara Kadin, Jakarta, Monday (1/20).

He revealed, there were investors from the European Bank willing to help finance all rubber replanting with the condition that the origin of the wood belonged to them.

He said, the area of rubber plantations of 3.4 million hectares (ha), about 30 percent would be replanted. "Not all rubber plantations are replanted, maybe around 20-30 percent of the total area of rubber plantations," he said.

"Europeans take the wood, he pays to the farmers. It will be used as sawdust. Soon coming to Indonesia and will discuss this issue with PTPN, "he said.

Aziz said that the cost of replanting rubber was quite large at around Rp 50 million per ha. "The problem now is if farmers cut down trees, they have to keep eating and that's the high cost or social costs," he said.
